Jared Smylie, P.E.

ITS Engineer based out of
Orlando, Florida.

Who am I?

Hey there, I'm Jared Smylie! I'm currently working as a Senior ITS Engineer within AtkinsRealis' Intelligent Transportation Systems team. When not working, I love building things, tinkering with my 3D Printer, travelling, and tabletop games.

I acquired my Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Spring of 2020. I graduated with honors distinctions from UCF's Burnett Honors College. My career started at Traffic Engineering Data Solutions (TEDS, now Stanley Consultants) in early 2019. Since my career began, I've taken a number of steps to further my professional career. In that time I've taken and passed my FE Exam, and the October 2020 Transportation PE Exam. As of June of 2024, I am a Professional Engineer!

While at TEDS, I was involved in a number of projects which have been constructed around Florida. Some that I am most proud of are those improving safety conditions. Partnering with the Florida Department of Transportation, I've produced designs for installing Wrong-Way Detection Sites throughout I-4 Ultimate, and I-4 Beyond the Ultimate. Through TEDS, I've also worked closely with Central Florida Expressway Authority to produce designs for Variable Speed Limit Signs, CCTV Cameras, Vehicle Detectors, and Dynamic Message Signs along SR 417 and SR 429. I also have experience with Adaptive Signalization design across Florida, adhering to ATSPM standards, and FDOT Smart Signal requirements. In order to ensure that workers are safe while constructing these projects, I've also created Maintenance of Traffic, and Temporary Traffic Control during the times construction would be active.

Since joining AtkinsRealis, I've lead and contributed to many projects around District Five for the Florida Department of Transportation. For District Five, I've lead the design for: Dynamic Message Signs along I-75, CCTV Cameras for Truck Parking Availability Systems along I-75,  Smart Work Zone System Research and Development, upgrading existing Signals to be Automated Traffic Signal Performance Metric (ATSPM) ready within Orange County, and provided the FDOT with numerous reviews for their Electronic Review Comments (ERC) system. The ERC System is where Department trusted Engineers review proposed designs from other contractors, to ensure they meet FDOT standards. With AtkinsRealis, I've also assisted on various projects throughout Florida: I have managed projects within Walton County and the City of Clearwater to provide Signing and Pavement Marking Design, alongside Lighting improvements.
